Incoming Tide
As you can probably tell, a lot of my jobs lately have put me near the water. I’ve been happy to take advantage of some photo ops for myself after the shooting for clients is over with.
Shiny Shoreline
A bonus effect happens when you get down at a really low angle on wet sand – the sand becomes highly reflective. If it’s wet enough it becomes a virtual mirror.
Driftwood
low angle is one of my favorite perspectives to incorporate into a composition. Presenting a subject in a very different way than from eye-level helps give it more visual impact.
Down by the Seaside
Down is certainly the key word here. I got all the way down to the ground with the camera to get a perspective that has some visual impact.
Chain Lightning
I was driving home from a location shoot through this storm the other evening and just after sunset the rain eased up enough for me to decide to pull off the highway, jump out of the truck, and snap a few shots. I managed to get a few decent shots and then all at once just as if it had been synchronized in some way, it got dark, the lightning diminished greatly in frequency signalling the end of the storm, and the mosquitoes discovered me. I called it quits and hit the highway for home. This is actually the very last frame I shot before I left.
Dreams
Dreaming of a time when my town was a sleepy little dot on the map consisting mostly of citrus groves and pastures. Progress marches on and now every square inch of the land you see in this image is covered with apartment complexes and parking lots. I happened to noticed today that there is a theme surrounding this week’s posts. It was just a happy coincidence but now I think I will stick with it through Friday just for fun.
Stop and Shoot the Roses
My wife has a lot of roses around the house. I walk by them with a camera around my neck several times a day on my way to my truck and back and once in a while I take the time to shoot them when they catch my eye.
Down on the Ground
After all the rain finally subsided a few mushrooms sprouted up in my back yard. I decided to take a bugs-eye view shot of one of them just for fun.
Moonlight Flight
I have been shooting like mad lately for paying clients and almost not at all for myself. I think Memorial Day was the only day I’ve had off in about 7 weeks. So I’m still mostly just grabbing random old shots out of my computer to post here until that changes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though because otherwise some shots like this that I actually sort of like might stay buried in my archives and not ever get seen by anyone.
Tiny and Vibrant
I have no idea what the name of this tiny little flower is but it’s certainly a strong visual change after 3 days of posting black and white images here.
Intricate Mud
I figured I may as well make it 3 in a row for black and white posts here. I was totally fascinated with the details and texture created in this patch of mud by all the assorted tracks of insects and small animals. You wouldn’t believe the swarm of mosquitoes that I had to brave when I stopped to compose this shot though. Click this one to make it bigger and get a better appreciation of the texture.
Simplicity
I saw this while working in my yard this weekend and had to stop what I was doing to grab a camera and make this image. Simple, stark, black and white compositions are something I really enjoy once in a while.
Pixie Dust
Pentax shooters know all about pixie dust. For the uninitiated, a few specific Pentax lenses that are well-known for their almost magical ability to make even mundane subjects take on an ethereal visual quality are said to have pixie dust in them. I own a couple of them and when I use them I love being surprised when something that looks iffy through the viewfinder gets sprinkled with the pixie dust as it passes through the lens.
Blast From the Past
I ran across this image while digging through some old material for a project this past weekend and set it aside to post here. I haven’t processed many lightning images in black and white but this looked like it had the right inherent contrast to make it work.
Purple Haze
I’m overwhelmed with client work this week as a major magazine deadline is approaching and everyone wants me to shoot something at the last minute to get published. So I’m still not shooting anything for myself. As a matter of fact I’m hardly even getting any sleep because I’m shooting assignments until at least 9:00 pm each night and then driving home and processing files until the wee hours and then I start over again. So here is another random image pulled from my archives that I never got around to posting here in the past.
The Road Less Traveled
In the mountains of New Mexico. I’m really looking forward to the next photography tour that I’m leading here later this year.
Burnt Woods
I’ve found myself working with patterns the last few days. This is one of the images that I have been toying with.
Follow Me
Whenever I find myself on a road like this I hear the siren song in my head beckoning me each time I turn a corner to keep going to the next turn, and then the next, and the next…
Fish Face
I decided since everything else I posted this week had water in it I would stick with the theme to finish things up on Friday.
Soaring
Somehow I have actually managed to fit a bit of creative shooting just for myself into my schedule lately. It’s been nice to have the opportunity to be artistic with the camera again.
Flower Power
I was doing some work around the house this weekend and noticed that a couple of the orchids that sit out on the porch were blooming nicely. I decided to take short break from chores and take a few shots. It was nice diversion for a bit of time. I knew if I didn’t make myself take the time while I was thinking about it I probably wouldn’t think about it again until who knows when. My luck, by the time I would remember the flowers would be gone.
