Winter Moon
I never pass up an opportunity to photograph the moon when it has a ring around it. I saw this ring last night so I grabbed a camera and strolled out into the neighborhood to find a good vantage point to shoot it. I don’t know why, but ever since I was a child I was fascinated with the phenomenon of lunar halos and now I’m happy that I have the means to capture their special beauty and share.
Wet Brick Streets
I was doing some product photography in my studio yesterday and when I walked outside to leave I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was raining. I wound up being quite delayed in getting to my truck because I can never resist shooting in the streets outside my studio when it’s raining. I was soaked through to the skin by the time I was finally ready to drive home but I was happy to have had the chance to do some creative work just for myself for a change.
Holiday Halo
As you can see from my recent postings I’ve been turning my camera to the night skies a lot recently. Christmas Eve was no exception, I came home from visiting with family and as I walked across my front yard I looked up and saw this wonderful halo around the moon. I have a portfolio of moon halo images that I’ve made over the years and this is another nice one for me to add to my collection.
Looking Up
For the first time in what seems like forever I took a night off from processing images for clients and spent some time in the woods. I brushed the dust off my old telescope and and really enjoyed looking at the cosmos for a change instead of looking at a computer screen. This image shows a clear sky full of stars and planets through a stand of trees that were illuminated by the flickering light of my campfire. Jupiter can be seen straight up through the trees in the constellation of Taurus.
Bright Lights
I photographed this brightly illuminated house on a foggy evening last week. The motion of the fog that was above the house made an interesting sky backdrop in this scene due to the long time exposures that I combined for this image.
Twilight View
Today I’m posting something from a current project. This image is one from a recent shoot that is a possibility for the cover of an upcoming issue of the duPont Registry.
Friday Night in the Diner
I took this photo of the counter while having dinner in the Owl Cafe in Albuquerque. They have a great green chile cheeseburger that I keep going back for whenever I’m in town.
Chaco Canyon by Moonlight
We were blessed with crystal clear skies in the canyon all day yesterday and into the night. When the moon came up over the mesa it illuminated the entire canyon with it’s bright light and we really enjoyed standing beneath the stars in the silence of the desert photographing the moonlit vista.
Evening at the Pool
Just a night shot from the same photo session by the same pool as the food shot from yesterday.
Carnival Colors
It’s been raining a lot here lately. One nice thing about the rain is the way it makes everything reflective and colorful at night.
Chain Lightning
I was driving home from a location shoot through this storm the other evening and just after sunset the rain eased up enough for me to decide to pull off the highway, jump out of the truck, and snap a few shots. I managed to get a few decent shots and then all at once just as if it had been synchronized in some way, it got dark, the lightning diminished greatly in frequency signalling the end of the storm, and the mosquitoes discovered me. I called it quits and hit the highway for home. This is actually the very last frame I shot before I left.
All the Lights are Turning Red
I was walking downtown and realized that all the lights in this scene were turning red. The line from the Eagle’s song got stuck in my head and I figured I as may as well compose a picture.
Mean Streets
It was raining last night when I walked out of my studio to go home so instead of walking straight to my truck I made a detour through the neighborhood with my camera and grabbed a few shots for myself.
The Artist’s Beach Cottage
I was photographing a beach cottage last night that is owned by an artist who is well known for his glass and ceramic works. A thunderstorm positioned itself in front of the cottage as night fell so I went out onto the dunes to capture the scene. This is the resulting image.
Moonlight Flight
I have been shooting like mad lately for paying clients and almost not at all for myself. I think Memorial Day was the only day I’ve had off in about 7 weeks. So I’m still mostly just grabbing random old shots out of my computer to post here until that changes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though because otherwise some shots like this that I actually sort of like might stay buried in my archives and not ever get seen by anyone.
Red Ride
I was out shooting with some folks from the Tampa Bay Camera Club the other night and as we were about to call it a night and get some burgers I decided to get down on the ground and take one last shot outside the restaurant.
